Congratulation to Nathan Price, Early Years Leader and Reception Teacher at George Dixon Primary School in Birmingham. Nathan won the amazing ‘Sand and Water Table’ worth £500 kindly donated by Community Playthings UK at our IFIP ‘Inclusive Learning Environments’ hosted by Nursery World Winner - Cheryl Bedding.

Our winner is pictured here with the @Right Honourable Baroness Floella Benjamin – the inspirational Trinidadian-British actress, singer, presenter, author, businesswoman, and politician.

Nathan says that inclusivity is so important in Early Years (and beyond...) as children should always be made to feel like they belong.

“At the heart of our EYFS curriculum is our ultimate focus upon PSED and Communication. These two prime areas of the EYFS take precedence in our setting. Our pupils with SEND needs of varying degrees are always considered when planning our environment and the resources we have available. We want to make sure that classrooms are predictable, and each area is consistent so children can pre-plan, and revisit their learning time and time again. We try and ensure all children can access all resources, whatever their current developmental stage. Resources are open ended and do not dictate what children should do with them.”

The George Dixon Primary School in Birmingham has been praised by their local authority Educational Psychologist for their neutral displays, and focus upon natural materials and muted tones. They have also advised the school about which strategies to introduce to help neurodivergent pupils that have in fact aided all pupils.

Nathan added, “This sand and water table will be a great addition to our setting. We are always seeking new ways to set up and implement opportunities for sensory play. Especially for those pupils who have sensory feedback needs. We are very excited to see what we can do!”
